Hey everyone! I’m from China and currently doing my PhD here in the US. Today I thought I’d share a little recap of my day in a fun way.
I woke up super early—5:30 in the morning! After a quick wash-up, I headed straight to rowing practice with my club. We trained until 8 AM, and then I came back home. I had a third of a cup of coffee, grabbed some breakfast, and by 9 AM I was already in the lab, diving into my code.
I spent about 20 minutes submitting my PhD progress and plans. The highlight of my day? Finally realizing what those complicated physics formulas are actually for—they’re just for calculating probabilities!
At noon, I went home for lunch, then squeezed in a workout until around 2:10. Back to the lab afterward, I worked on my code for a bit. At 3:30, I ran into the systems group from my department, and I took the chance to ask them for help with my computer. We ended up working on it until 6 PM—so basically, I didn’t get much else done!
After that, I went home, cooked, ate dinner, and finished up by 7:30. Now it’s 8:30, and I’m planning to head to bed around 10. Lately, I’ve been trying to stay consistent with exercising—just to keep healthy.
And my takeaway for today: sitting down with a book is actually really enjoyable. You not only learn a lot, but it also gives you a chance to reflect on yourself.

Hey everyone! I’m from China and currently doing my PhD here in the US. Today is the second day I recorded my life
So, today I actually woke up pretty early—not as early as yesterday, but still, 6:30 isn’t too bad! I went to the gym for rowing practice, and finished around 7:30. Got home, had breakfast and two cups of coffee (can’t function without it!), then took a quick shower.
After that, I went to the library, checked some emails, and sent my lab mate some info which could be useful for us. Most of my morning was spent playing around with code, trying to wrap my head around those physics formulas—finally started to make some sense of them!
For lunch, I just had leftovers from yesterday, which was totally fine. Then I took a short break and later outlined my survey, which is about AI for inverse problems. I mean, it probably sounds pretty complicated, but I’ll try to explain it in a few days!
At 4:30, I joined a discussion about how to present our research and science to kids and adults. Everyone shared lots of cool ideas—it was really fun to hear different perspectives. Maybe after thinking about it some more, I’ll feel more ready to share my thoughts.
After that, I went to swim class, which ended at 8 PM. I came home, had some delicious Chinese food with fresh rice for dinner, and felt super satisfied.
My takeaway today: You only live once, so be happy, focus on yourself, and keep working on self-improvement!

Hey everyone! I’m from China and currently doing my PhD here in the US. Today is the second day I recorded my life
Today I woke up a bit late almost 7 am. For breakfast, I had a croissant and a cappuccino. Then I took my scooter to the office before 8. The weather forecast said it would be rainy and maybe even flooding, but actually, it turned out to be peaceful and nice.
This morning, I emailed my school’s Makerspace because I really want to create a course or workshop about combining art, media, and AI. I think that would be fantastic!
I also finally understood what the inverse problem is in my quantum chromodynamics research, and I gathered some papers for my survey.
Lunch was just Chipotle—a pretty regular choice, but also healthy, so that’s a plus. After lunch, I took a short break, then messaged my advisor to request a meeting. He replied and said we could meet on the way to UVA on Friday, which is great!
Around 4:30, my lab mate and I volunteered as math tutors for FORKids, a non-profit organization. The children there were so adorable. I helped one really cute girl with geometry—she was smart, just needed a bit more time with calculations. I really hope she figures it out and keeps making progress.
Dinner at home was fried rice and veggies—so good after a long and tiring day.
Today’s takeaway: When you feel confused about yourself—like “Who am I? What should I do? Why am I in this situation?”—just take a deep breath and read some books that help you understand yourself. Back when I was struggling to figure out whether I was gay or straight, I read a lot and it really helped me get to know myself better.
See you‘ll next time. Hope you have a great day!

Hey everyone! I’m from China and currently doing my PhD here in the US. Today is the fourth day I recorded my life
Today I woke up at 6:30, but honestly, I stayed in bed until about 6:50—classic me! My husband and I went to the gym together, kind of like a couple’s workout, although we each just did our own thing.
After the gym, we had croissants and coffee, which was such a satisfying start to the morning. Then I headed to my office to work on some research about invertible neuron networks.
Lunch was Panda Express today. It always tastes way sweeter than real Chinese food, but what can I say—I had Chipotle yesterday, so not many choices left!
In the afternoon, I managed to implement the invertible model for the inverse problem I’m studying. Not bad! I also figured out some of its limitations, which is pretty useful moving forward.
After that, I visited my friend at his office in Mpark. Mpark is a super inclusive, cross-disciplinary makerspace at ODU where people from all fields can get creative with everything from typewriters and sewing machines to 3D printers and laser cutters. The atmosphere there is fantastic and really inspiring! If I ever get a chance to bring more AI ideas into what they’re doing, I think it would be super interesting.
The biggest happiness today? Steak from Harris Teeter for dinner! So good! In the evening, I went to swimming class, which was okay, but I have to say I was pretty exhausted by the end. Finally came home—totally wiped out after such a long day.
Today’s takeaway:
Try to smile at your day. If you don’t, no one else is going to bring that smile into your life for you.
See you tomorrow! Hope you all had a great day too!

Hey everyone! I’m from China and currently doing my PhD here in the US. Today is the fifth day I recorded my life.
Today I went to UVA with my lab mate and my advisor. He picked us up at 7:30am in his Tesla—which was SO cool. We had a great time along the way, chatting about all sorts of things. Turns out, my advisor is super passionate about Asian history—especially Japanese history and stories from World War II. The depth and range of his knowledge is truly impressive!
We arrived at UVA around 11:30am. After a really intense and fascinating discussion, we all grabbed a quick lunch—sandwiches, nothing fancy, but it hit the spot. After a short break, we dove straight back into another round of discussions from 3:30 to 7:30pm. Honestly, it was amazing. I could really feel the energy and spark from the other researchers and scientists. They were so enthusiastic and genuinely inspiring—it was contagious!
We finally got home at 11:30pm, totally exhausted but also feeling like I learned so much.
Today’s takeaway:
Dive into what you truly love, and you’ll discover endless passion and motivation.

Hey everyone! I’m from China and currently doing my PhD here in the US. Today is the sixth day I recorded my life.
Today is Saturday, and honestly, it was a pretty easy, laid-back day. I got up really late because yesterday was exhausting, and I didn’t go to bed until about 12:30 am. Research discussions are seriously draining—I felt totally wiped out this morning.
I met up with one friend and went to the Chinese market from around 9:30 to 12:30. We bought loads of veggies like cauliflower, lettuce, and potatoes. The price of chicken right now is amazing—just three dollars for a bunch of chicken legs! The market had tons of sales today, which definitely made me happy.
For lunch, I finished off some leftover Harris Teeter steak. After that, I took a good nap and then spent the afternoon doing some TA work, mainly grading assignments. I have to say, students these days are so lazy! I mean, there’s ChatGPT, Gemini, and so many other tools they could use, but they just answer questions however they want—it’s kind of frustrating.
For dinner, I ate with friends—we had coconut pork rib soup and fried eggs. By the way, if you want to know how to cook coconut pork ribs, just leave a comment and I’ll share the recipe!
Today’s takeaway:
If you feel tired, just let yourself rest—don’t fight your nature. Listen to your body and give yourself a break when you need it.
